Significance

Jakhau is a historic port town located in the Abdasa Taluka of Kutch. It is named after the legendary 'Jakh Botera' (72 saints) who are believed to have landed here. Once a bustling trade hub connecting Kutch to Zanzibar and Mumbai, today it is one of Gujarat's busiest fishing harbors and home to a strategic Coast Guard station. The town retains an old-world charm with its weather-beaten boats and rustic coastal life.

History

The legend of Jakhau revolves around the 72 horse-riding saints (Jakhs) who came from the west (possibly Iran or Byzantium) in the 10th century. They helped the local population fight against the tyrannical ruler Jam Punara. The Jakh Botera temple nearby is a testament to this legend. Historically, Jakhau was a major gateway for spice and textile trade before silting reduced its capacity for large ships.
