Narayan Sarovar
One of Hinduism's five sacred lakes, at the far edge of India
01
The westernmost tirtha
Narayan Sarovar is counted among the panch-sarovar, the five holiest lakes of Hindu tradition. Whitewashed temple courtyards step down to the still water, and the pilgrim rhythm here has not changed in centuries.

02
Koteshwar's edge-of-the-world temple
Four kilometres on, the Shiva temple at Koteshwar stands on the last rock of India, the Arabian Sea breaking below and nothing beyond but water and the border. Sunset here is stark and unforgettable.

03
Chinkara country
The surrounding sanctuary is thorn-forest home to chinkara gazelle, desert fox and wintering birds — keep your eyes on the scrub as you drive.
