A vanishing giant
The Naliya grasslands hold one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard — a bird that can weigh over 10 kilograms and still fly. Fewer than 200 remain in the wild across India, and this sanctuary protects a small but significant population.

More than the bustard
The open scrub and grassland also support chinkara, desert fox, harriers and the houbara bustard in winter, making it a rewarding stop for anyone birding beyond the wetlands of Chhari Dhand.

Visiting responsibly
Access is with a local guide and forest permit, and sightings are never guaranteed — the bustard is shy and the population small. Early morning drives, quiet vehicles and patience give the best odds.
